"I want this record to sound exactly like a 22-year-old girl": ADÉLA reveals debut album PRIMA
ADÉLA has announced details of her debut album, PRIMA, arriving on 4 September and executive-produced by 100 gecs' Dylan Brady and Lizzo producer Blake Slatkin.
PRIMA is framed as a collection that leans into the complexities of her age, eschewing a single mood in favour of something more conflicted. “I want this album to sound exactly like a 22-year-old girl,” Adéla Jergová explains. “I tried to express both sides. I mixed the hard with the soft, the vulnerable with the swag of it all, the muscular beats with the feminine energy. I did exactly what I wanted to.”
Lyrically, the record examines insecurities, toxic relationships, and broader themes of identity and autonomy, anchored in what Jergová describes as “pumps and pirouettes.” The record’s title carries a dual meaning for an artist who began her career in ballet. While it translates as “first” to signal her debut, it also invokes the ranking of the lead dancer in a company, the prima ballerina. “I’m trying to be the prima ballerina of pop, and this is my first step to achieve that,” Jergová explains.
New single "Ain’t In LA", released today, is accompanied by a Fred Gervais-directed video shot in the Slovakian popstar's hometown of Bratislava and finds her reflecting on the distance travelled since leaving Slovakia. Fusing 808s, glitchy drums, and chopped vocal samples, the song was inspired by a visit home, where she discovered photographs of her mother at 18. The image – her mother posed against a wall of smuggled pop culture posters – prompted a more personal turn in her writing. “I wrote this for her and the billion other bitches who are probably cooler than me,” Jergová says of the track.
