“Music is faceless. Let my music tell my story” says LA producer ZHU. And it’s fair to say that it definitely does. On new cut, ‘Cocaine Model’, he tells the tale of a mysterious globetrotting girl who’s wearing French designer label Isabel Marant, apparently “from Morocco by the way of South Chicago/graduated in the Bay/had her birthday in LA”.
As the synth line crescendos over a muffled sample of girls talking and giggling, it sounds like a plane taking off for a holiday destination as tropical as the production on “Cocaine Model”. The sultry and playful track revels in seductive sampling, shuffling beats backed by a hefty bassline and soulful vocals that enhance ZHU’s storytelling – proving that he’s one of the most exciting upcoming producers around.
