Portuguese trio Vaarwell drop alluring new electro-driven single “Money”
Vaarwell move away from their previous sugary sound, experimenting with darker tones and textures in latest offering “Money”.
Gentle, understated keyboards open the track, before Margarida Falcão's silky, haunting vocals drop in, becoming the instant focal point of the song. Gorgeous harmonising vocals are a feature throughout, working with woozy synth rhythms and sample details to give life to a beautifully dreamy track.
The chorus sees a hook that's almost impossible to not hum along to - an often desired quality within the hazy world of electro tinged dream-pop. The instrumentation on “Money” is kept fairly simple, but this is in no way a bad thing - instead, it makes room for the experimental samples and slick textures to take centre stage.
“‘Money’ is all about personal emancipation,” says the band. “It describes finding consolation and strength through independence.” That idea of emancipation resonates throughout the track - there's an air of freedom within the dreamlike sounds, the sense of liberation infusing every line.
Vaarwell have already seen their music received with open arms. With various festival slots under their belt and preparing for the release of their second EP, as well as a slot at SXSW this year, it’s safe to say the future is looking pretty damn bright for the dream-pop trio.
