Tony Njoku spars with intimacy on glitchy new single "CONFIDENT"
British-Nigerian artist Tony Njoku juggles glitchy electronica with his soulful sound on pensive new single "CONFIDENT".
"CONFIDENT" is a high-octane single built on a bed of jittery drums that punch with relentless force. The beat channels the energy of the visuals directed by Max Jebwab, which sees Njoku sparring with a partner in a dark room.
Laced with bursts of piercing synths, "CONFIDENT" wields a pensive energy that channels a bittersweet message of gaining confidence at the expense of someone else.
Tony Njoku's vocals stick to the soulful route, navigating through dark corners and a bustling instrumental to bring light to the track with his falsetto delivery.
Njoku's new single sees the instrumental take the lead, spitting an erratic synth melody that builds to a peak of crashing synths, drums, and vocals that fade eerily into a chaotic, industrial abyss of harsh sounds, before ending abruptly like a knockout.
Speaking about the new offering, Njoku explains, "The track is essentially a reaction to a situation I was in where I met a really awesome person and they were able to show me my worth and made me feel very confident in myself and I had never truly felt that till engaging with them. And because it was not a familiar feeling for me, I didn’t really know how to act, I would sabotage the situation, I’d push the other person away."
He adds of the accompanying visual, "The video is an homage to Steve McQueen’s 1993 film Bear. The film raises questions around masculinity, homoeroticism, race and violence, where the characters encounter shifts between moments of tenderness to aggression, from flirting to threatening."
The new single follows on from Njoku's earlier offerings "RAPTURE" and "HAPLESS".
