Throwback acts are normally a waste of time. Why would you expend your effort rehashing what you listened to when you were a kid, when you could use it to make something new?
As always, the exceptions prove the rule – and so it is with The Stepkids. Made up of members of Lauren Hill, 50 Cent, and Alicia Keys’ touring bands, the three-piece have impeccable professional credentials and tunes to match. Theirs is an unabashedly nostalgic yet curiously contemporary sound; the sound of classic soul played through an ever so slightly acid-tinged prism.
‘Legend In My Own Mind’, their beautifully louche forthcoming single, was recorded straight to reel-to-reel (of course), and produced by the band themselves. Look out for our interview with The Stepkids later today.
