Dream-pop duo Sports shimmy back into our lives with the feverish “Never Know”

Oklahoma dream-pop outfit Sports continue their hot streak of teaser singles for their new project Get A Good Look Pt. 1 with the funk-laden, neurotic fever-dream of “Never Know”.

Hot on the heels of their previous single, the luscious, revelry-inducing “Baby Baby”, “Never Know” is a jazzy, jingly jaunt full of hallucinogenic '80s synths and thick, dripping production that feels like a spiritual continuation of Sports' previous release.

While “Baby Baby” was vulnerable and spacey, “Never Know” is a bag of nerves, lyrically brimming with self-doubt, proclaiming the worry of moving forward, but also of standing still. Sigmund Freud by way of MGMT.

The track’s waves of misty synths that crash with a Gary Numan fervor, and on-point transitions mean it slivers through your ears like a bout of anxiety; words ricocheting through your mind alongside the track’s crystal-clear bass and paranoiac percussion. It’s pure sonic terror management, music best listened to spread out along a makeshift chaise longue with your eyes closed.

Reflecting upon the creation of “Never Know”, Sports' vocalist Cale Chronister details the consternation imbued within the song and its pairing with their previous single, noting that it's "a good follow up to 'Baby Baby' because it has some of the same energy, but it’s shifted into a feeling of hopelessness and desperation. In the bridge it even sorta references the lyrics in 'Baby Baby.' That wasn't necessarily intentional, but I do remember I wrote both of them in the same week, so it makes sense that the lyrics would have a similar tone. Must’ve been a rough week.”

The duo continue to gain scores of momentum as we inch closer to their anticipated follow-up to 2018’s debut album Everyone’s Invited, which is set to be a two-part LP, with the first instalment due to land in February.

"Never Know" is out now and Get A Good Look Pt. 1 will release 12 February. Find Sports on Instagram.
