Though it’s far too early to be certain, it looks as though this year we may actually get that fabled ‘decent summer’ that has been promised for the last few decades. In a month’s time, we might even have the soundtrack for it as well, with Best Coast’s debut Crazy for You finally seeing the warm light of day
Labelled ‘beach blanket lo-fi pop’, the fuzz of early demos did little to hide the talent of front woman Bethany Cosentino, and from this first sampler, it sounds as though the move from messy bedroom to a studio has done nothing but good. ‘Boyfriend’ keeps the hazy distortion and undercurrent of 60’s doo-wah pop and garage rock, but showcases the singer’s flawless voice properly for the first time. Backed by the loveable Bobb Bruno, the duo take noise pop and make it unmistakably their own.
If past form is anything to go by, the sun probably won’t hold out on British shores until the album’s release on August 2, but it should be the perfect slice of sun-drenched rock to take away the blues of yet another cancelled barbeque if this track is anything to go by.
