It’s been a while since we last saw The Books around these parts. They’re exquisitely orchestrated pieces of music have wooed audiences for a while and, if ‘Beautiful People’ is anything to go by, their latest long player The Way Out, will be a thing of beauty.
‘Beautiful People’ follows the same path as previous Books compositions. The track swirls into view with a barrage of backwards vocals, before the string section kicks in and the tip-tap of a the high hat rhythm clicks into view. There’s a crackle of needle on vinyl just bubbling away underneath, hinting that you’re listening to some great, lost masterpiece that’s only just be uncovered. The vocals are the usual philosophical rumblings over a beautiful acoustic guitar riff.
I always find it hard to describe the emotions I feel when listening to The Books. It’s a mixture of delight, euphoria and total bewilderment at the music they’ve crafted. It feels so open, real and honest, and yet it’s been amazingly crafted and pieced together from such separate pieces and threads of music, spoken word and samples.
