Well this all seems pretty festive, doesn’t it? Christmas coming early and Wot Not. Some of you may be lounging about gleefully, wrapped up warm, sipping cocoa like the insidious farcical image of such wintery times may conjure, while others are cursing the day that weather was brought in by whatever force as a factor on this planet.
In truth though, all of this snow does have more of that former romantic side to it than is often talked about. So it seems appropriate that this forst Song of The Day for the now seemingly prolonged winter months should have the apt title of ‘Snow’ – a highlight from one of the year’s finer EP turns from Big Scary Monsters new boys Tall Ships.
The track itself doesn’t leave you with that same wintery sensation of doom and gloom – quite the opposite in fact. Building up from a simple drum machine loop and plucked guitars before breaking into a calmed refrain of ‘Come inside, out of your snow, we’ll keep you warm’ and leading out with a crescendo of crashing drums and soaring guitars, it’s just the kind of emotionally led music that will glow incadescently and radiate warmth to all and sundry.
So – as a mini call to arms tacked onto the end of this briefest of frozen finger taps on the keyboard – let’s all play it an hope it thaws through these hazardous sheets of ice that lace our pavements. It may just help us all avoid injury. Which would be nice.
