There is a hazy, dreamlike quality to Fixers new single ‘Amsterdam,’ that is oddly reminiscent of the spectacularly overindulgent city the song is named after. The booming drums certainly catch your attention at first, but it’s the airy melody and buoyant vocals that makes the song truly memorable. The Oxford quintet slowly build on the fragile strains heard at the start of the number to craft a stirringly elegant track that conveys the tempting appeal of both reverie and leisure.
For it’s a song that will be better suited to seeing off your night as opposed to starting it, providing a fluid, stylish soundscape as you pray for the room to stop spinning. There are hints of Andy McCluskey in the soaring, passionate vocals which blend smoothly with the swirling, subdued arrangements, cascading over each other seamlessly as the song builds to its insistent breakdown and spiraling crescendo. It’s quite an engrossing journey that Fixers take you on over the course of these three flushed minutes, much like Amsterdam itself; where you know you’ve just had a grand time, but you just can’t quite remember much of anything specific at all after the music and memories start to slowly fade away.
