After listening to Warpaint’s debut The Fool several times over, it’s clear one track is above the rest. ‘Undertow’ is a spectacular introduction to the L.A outfit for those who have somehow managed to avoid the buzz around the all-women quartet. The first pharse that springs to mind is unhinged opulence, with the listener being treated to everything from luxuriously deep guitar harmonies to numerous-part heavenly warblings – it avoids the risk of being over-produced thanks to the fact that everything is so raw and, dare I say, understated.
The lyrics tell the tale of a black widow type, a femme fatale if you will, the chorus line sings: ”Now I’ve got you in the undertow//”Why you wanna blame my for your troubles”. It’s as pyschedelic as it’s insanely catchy, and just another reason why many including moi can’t wait for October when they come to these shores in support of the record.
The Fool is released on the king of all indie imprints Rough Trade come Monday 25 of October.
