Admittedly, we’re nearly a month late on posting this newie from London-based producer Primary 1 (real name Joe Flory). So by now, “The Blues” has been spread all around the interweb and every blog imaginable (probably). But on the off chance that this is the only music website you frequent, you’re in for a bit of a treat.
Primary 1 has been on our radar for a fair few months now. After being brought to our attention last October by releasing a rather stunning limited edition 7″ single (“Foaming”) that not only featured a remix from musical kindred sprit Memory Tapes, but 100 individually painted covers (here’s mine); is was pretty much love at first listen/sight.
Since then, Primary 1 has released a 15-track album of early demos in the shape of Mess Detective (for free, no less) and been busy recording his debut album which features a plethora of pretty impressive guest collaborators – Diplo, Gonzales, Zdar (who has produced Phoenix, Cut Copy, and the new Rapture album) and not to mention The Cardigans and A Camp vocalist Nina Persson who features on “The Blues”.
A beautifully wistful, upbeat song about well, The Blues – either a reference to depression or Flory’s hometown football team Ipswich Town (which in certain circles could be considered the very same thing) – Nina Persson’s unmistakable vocals combined with Flory’s impressive croon and tight, intense rhythm section creates Primary 1′s finest moment to date.
With a full UK tour with current one-to-watch-golden-girl Ellie Goulding and an album due this autumn via Atlantic Records, 2010 is shaping up to be a hugely successful year for Mr Flory.
