Hounds of Hate find themselves neither at the start, not at the end, of a movement. They’re lo-fi blend of acid house, dub and electronica that has seen them been dubbed as “soft-core screw house”. What ever that means.
All I know is that ‘Tumble Down Slow’ exists in a vaccum. Not as urban as The Bug or as playful as Gold Panda, Hounds Of Hate are forging another path through the grey and grime-ridden streets. It’s skittish beat and rotary synth feels grey and rooted in something concrete and sky scraping. Whilst it feels a little lightweight to be, for me anyway, truly “urban”, it’s still talking from another side of the city – a side that, perhaps, doesn’t take itself too seriously, but likes the ability to poke fun at not just themselves but at their surroundings and situation as well.
Recent single ‘I Like Triangles’ probably speaks more from that side of HoH personality. The video for that is below. Sadly, the director Jayne Helliwell passed away recently, and the single has been dedicated in her honour.
