SOTD #71 // Teen Daze: 'New Theory (Washed Out cover)'
The mysterious, illusive bedroom producer is something that most people would love to be, putting out track after track to critical acclaim, and that’s a route that Washed Out has tread with aplomb. ‘High Times’ was the breakthrough record of last year, creating an array of tags desperate to label its signature sound.
Having such heady contemporaries doesn’t seem to bother Vancouver’s Teen Daze. Current darling of the blogging world, the quality of work from his peers is something that seems to spur him on, utilising his moment in the spotlight to deconstruct Washed Out’s ‘New Theory’. Whilst the original is chilled and sun drenched, Teen Daze takes the raw material of the track and constructs something that feels like it should be the soundtrack to a seminal 80’s bratpack movie, giving the faded melodies a new, neon burst of life.
A limited run of the upcoming EP Four More Years is due soon on Wonder Beard Tapes, but the 100 copies will be gone before you know it. Luckily, it’s likely there’ll be a lot more coming from Teen Daze’s Vancouver bedroom in the coming months, so lap this up as sustenance in the mean time.
