Ex-Katzenjammer member Sol Heilo goes solo with the swaying orchestral pop of "America"
Formerly a part of the much-missed Norwegian quartet Katzenjammer, Solveig Heilo has launched her solo career as Sol Heilo with a debut album to come in October.
A superbly talented composer, singer and all-round musician, it seems that Sol Heilo has focused all that ability into in symphonic pop if debut single "America" is anything to go by.
Written on a hot night in New Orleans, "America" is brimful of gorgeous instrumentation; from the shimmering bells which lead into a chorus full of timpani and sweeping strings, to the harp flourishes which dance through the second verse Heilo has composed something magisterial. Underneath it all though, is a brilliant folk pop tune led by the Norwegian's powerful and beautiful voice.
A song addressing liberation from a downward spiral, there's more than enough brightness in "America" to hope that Sol Heilo's album will provide many euphoric moments like this.
