Smash Williams triumph with their refreshingly simple world-beater "This One Will Go Down Hard"
Smash Williams' glistening, euphoric new track "This One Will Go Down Hard" is our Song Of The Day.
The Glasgow-based duo, comprising Stuart Dougan (French Wives) and Gordon Skene (Frightened Rabbit), have only a handful of songs out so far.
"This One Will Go Down Hard" is a sprawling opus with passion and grand ambition in spades. It's the kind of world-beating, carthatic, cleansing noise that stops you in your tracks - it's undeniably emotional, bursting with honesty, that feels like a thump in the stomach. It's built to soundtrack cinematic climaxes - love, death, triumph, agony... this swerves through the gamut of Hollywood endings, before fading into oblivion. It's a bit '80s; it's a bit Arcade Fire; it's refreshingly simple in its construction, and it's an exciting indicator of Smash Williams' next steps.
Speaking about the track, the pair say: "Lyrically I think it's one of the most honest things I've written even though it blurs the lines of fantasy and reality. It's quite a claustophobic take on romance but I quite enjoy that, because sometimes that's how romance feels. The 'glitterball slowdance' outro was loosely based on the ice dance scene from Edward Scissorhands and whilst it would be impossible to live up to such a beautiful benchmark, we gave it our damnedest try!"
The band are now in the studio, recording their debut single due out later this year.
