I think I’ve been suffering from Scandi-fatigue recently. The sheer number of Scandinavian bands that come appended with tags like ‘glacial’ or ‘shimmering’ was just getting too much for me.
And then along came Simian Ghost – a Swedish band who sound rather more like Wham! than The Knife. ‘Free Agent’ actually does sound rather a lot like ‘Last Christmas’ (one of the greatest songs ever written, obviously), but played through a Swedish lakeside sheen. The vocal has a charming waver of the sort that one might expect to hear on a Passion Pit record, while the entire track dips in pitch every so often, as if someone has held their finger down on the tape. It is, essentially, lovely.
The Lovelorn EP is out on Hit Or Heist 14 November. In the meantime, download ‘Free Agent’ below.
