Sharon Jones is the archetypal ‘artist out of time’. She is the face of a small but growing scene that is slowly reviving the spirit of golden era soul and funk; a globe-trotting 55 year old who seems like she should have been selling out every venue on earth some time around 1968.
It helps, of course, that Jones is backed up by what could be the tightest live band The Line Of Best Fit has ever seen. The Dap-Kings are actually something of an embarrassment. They are so far ahead of most ‘contemporary’ bands that just a few minutes in their presence makes virtually every other guitar act you can think of seem laughable.
Jones, along with the Dap-Kings, played a packed show at the Barbican on Wednesday in support of their latest record 100 Days 100 Nights. They had almost 2,000 awkward, middle-class white people (myself included) dancing comically in the aisles. If that’s not an indication of success, I don’t know what is.
