Producers God Colony recruit activist and boss bitch Samirah Raheem for “Girls”
UK production duo God Colony collaborate with Samirah Raheem to create an empowering, ominous anthem designed to take down slut-shamers, and inspire others to do the same, on the antagonistic “Girls”.
“How old are you?”, “Grown” replied Samirah Raheem to American conservative reporter Jesse Lee Peterson, who questioned her outfit and motives for attending Amber Rose’s SlutWalk last year. The model and activist’s defiant attitude and quick-witted responses soon went viral, with tens of thousands of people commending Samirah’s interview and applauding her efforts to convince the reporter that, regardless of a person's sexual activity or the way they choose to dress, “everyone’s a slut!”
That two minute video soon reached London-based producers God Colony, having previously worked with Kojey Radical and FLOHIO, who then approached Raheem to collaborate. What resulted is new single “Girls”, an encouraging call-to-arms laced with fierce lyrics and shady, progressive electronics. The track is the second release on God Colony's new label, MAD WORLD.
The calm, confident flow of Samirah Raheem's voice, matched with the duo’s hip-hop infused electronics makes “Girls” an instant, edgy earworm. “You know I got good energy / it’s flowing like a tap” rhymes Raheem; as dense beats roll out in defiant style. During the chorus, she proudly raps “Girls / sometimes you gon’ be rollin’ with the best of ‘em / Don’t you fuckin’ mess with ‘em”, before God Colony’s industrial-tinged drums prompt her to drop back in and slay with her second verse.
“I write my own story” Samirah declares. Just remember: “Every dog has his day / and bad bitches too”.
"Girls" is out now via MAD WORLD. Find God Colony on Facebook and Samirah Raheem on Instagram.
