Flying Lotus is, it turns out, almost as good an A&R as he is a producer. His Brainfeeder label continues to go from strength to strength, with recent releases from Lapalux and Thundercat likely to go down as catalogue highlights.
RYAT, the label’s latest signing, looks set to continue that winning streak. The LA multi-instrumentalist’s ‘Howl’ is a brief, bracing oddity that brings to mind the skitty, analogue percussion of ‘Idioteque’, and the uncanny melodicism of Kate Wax’s excellent Dust Collision. Totem, the album from which the track is taken, is apparently based on a series of ‘spirit animals’ – but, thankfully, ‘Howl’ suggests that the project has avoided the wanky mysticism that might suggest, in favour of inventive, evocative pop.
Totem is out 4 June on Brainfeeder. H/t to Fact.
