Bristol's RVBY dreams big on rose-tinted pop track “Honey Bee”
Fun and fresh, the sophomore track from singer-songwriter RVBY (aka Ruby Donadel) is a glittering pop jewel that is the first of a series of singles.
With its classy production and infectiously catchy chorus, “Honey Bee” is a track that wouldn’t sound out of place in the UK Top 40. Drawing from elements of pop and hip-hop with some bubbly electronic tones, there's a bright, summery feel to the song.
While the instrumentation is sleek and excellently executed, it does serve primarily as a backdrop for the vocals, and RVBY’s saccharine voice and captivating vocal melodies steal the limelight. The structure of the track is pop-conventional, but the chorus in injected with a punchy use of additional bassy tones and percussion, giving the song more of a unique, contemporary edge.
Lyrically, the track conveys a message of hope: “it can be rough / life gets tough / you had enough” RVBY sings, following up with “don’t give up, just feel the love”. This portrayal of hope couples beautifully with the upbeat, optimistic vibe that runs through both the instrumentation and vocals.
"Honey Bee is about big dreamers," says RVBY, "but when those people get caught up in the daily routine of their working lives it can stop the colour from coming in. I wrote this song to say I have the same big dream and I’m going to try and make it a reality."
