Stockholm-based star Rhys channels '00s guitar-pop while preparing for heartbreak on new single
Taking cues from Avril Lavigne and Kelly Clarkson, Rhys takes her magical pop sound and adds a new edge to as she prepares her second album.
Rhys debuted back in 2016 with the subtle devastation of “Swallow Your Pride”, a stripped-back ballad which she made with Britney Spears collaborator Jörgen Elofsson. A slew of high-energy tropical house-inspired singles followed, from “No Vacancy” to “Too Good To Be True”. This juxtaposition of sounds, lovelorn balladry and festival-ready anthems, made for an interesting debut album, Stages, which dropped towards the end of 2018.
Working with up and coming Swedish songwriting and production duo TeoFrans (Naaz, Lil Halima, LOVA), “Better Break My Heart” sees Rhys step in a new direction. Channelling ‘00s guitar-pop Rhys is done with the games, the back and forth and ready for her relationship to end so can just get on with her life. Pain is temporary, even that inflected by a metaphoric meteor strike as the track's lyrics detail.
With more new music in the pipeline and a handful of new collaborators on board Rhys is set to explore more elements of her pop sound as she works on her upcoming album. Set for release in the Spring of next year, expect more experimentation, more honest songwriting and more moments which showcase Rhys' vocals.
