Zimbabwe-born RATIONALE shares disco-tinged love song and R1 Hottest Record, "Something For Nothing"
RATIONALE meshes many sounds to make a contemporary yet timeless pop song in "Something For Nothing", aired last night as Annie Mac's Hottest Record on Radio 1.
The Zimbabwe-born artist was brought up on a diet on his mother's eclectic record collection on anything from Fela Kuti to Meat Loaf. After moving to London, he quickly soaked up the city's rock and indie music.
Such experiences have led to the kind of magpie-like borrowing heard on "Something For Nothing", a song bursting with bulbous bass, groove-laden guitar licks, soulful hushes and blippy synths (Shura's "Touch" for the latter, anyone)?
"Cus you give me just a little bit / of the joy that lies withing the mist / I just wanna be the one you call when things go wrong / and I'll come running", RATIONALE croons passionately about a love that's not quite unrequited nor fully embraced.
"Something for Nothing’ is a groove based disco tinged love song written about someone I know” Rationale says.
"I was listening to a lot of Prince and watching Marvin Gaye / Quincy Jones documentaries around the time I wrote it. I’m a big bass-line fan so when I wrote this one, I knew exactly where I wanted to take it.”
