Pusher crafts a slinky digital symphony with "Tell You" (feat. Hunnah)
On his latest single, Toronto producer/DJ Pusher works with singer Hunnah to produce an irresistible summer anthem that is so narcotising it feels wrong to listen to it only once.
From its opening chimes it's obvious that "Tell You" is going to be smooth and sleek. The song builds with Lemaitre-style piano and verses from Hunnah that echo a Drake-ish cadence minus the self pity.
Pusher keeps the instrumental constantly shifting, always giving listeners something new to grasp on and managing to make plenty of little alterations that still mesh perfectly with Hunnah's vocals. The piano melody from the beginning is echoed on synth strings, rubbery house chords give the hook a dancefloor sheen, and the percussion is crisp without overpowering the delicate instrumental balance. Each element also has its own opportunity to shine. Pusher is a master of space and knows that just stacking sounds isn't the key to perfect pop.
This commitment to giving the track breathing room imbues "Tell You" with a breezy, stripped down spontaneity. It's easy to picture this kind of song getting bloated in the hands of a less skilled producer.
Like fellow Black Butter artists Elderbrook or Louis the Child, Pusher understands how to craft a balanced, smart song that blends electronic elements and pop sensibility. "Tell You" is the kind of song you'll be humming to yourself for weeks.
