Listen: Paperwhite - "Take Me Back"
Some songs are made for summer. Brooklyn brother-sister duo Paperwhite seem to have made it their intent to monopolise on the particularly intangible quality that makes a track uniquely suited for a day drenched in sunshine. Behold, “Take Me Back”.
So light it skirts on inconsequential, the power of the track rests on the sugar sweet vocal of singer Katie Marshall who’s in equal parts demanding and begging her lover to show her the respect she deserves. A glorious crush of synth and feathered snare beats roll gently below, weighing her voice to an adept reimagining of 80s synth-pop, producing the kind of cut you’d half expect to hear at the back-end of a John Hughes movie.
As a follow up to their first drop “Magic”, “Take Me Back” does not veer wildly from the path previously laid down: all shimmering, kaleidoscopic and wrapped in youthful exuberance - exactly the kind of soundtrack you’d want for a summer adventure. Paperwhite might be running the risk of becoming too fixed on one style, but I can’t help but feel that at the moment it’s serving them pretty well.
