Listen: Paperwhite - "Gold"
Philadelphia natives Paperwhite unveil one of the final songs from their debut EP Magic; the dazzling allure of "Gold".
Ben and Katie Marshall have had quite a year with praise across the board for their beautiful and dreamy synth-pop numbers. First it was their mesmerising 80s-inspired debut "Got Me Goin'", then came along pop fizzer "Magic" and later one of the most underrated pop songs of the last few months, "Take Me Back". Their consistency has been a joy.
New song "Gold" may not gleam quite as brightly as some of these aforementioned numbers but it must be noted as a confident stop gap in the band's development. It hears Paperwhite willingly experiment with a world-pop sound, with synths fashioned like marimbas and syncopated rhythms grumbling beneath all the electronic folds. Katie's falsetto hook resounds across otherworldly pop plains as if reminding us this band has ambition and ideas. We're very excited for the next chapter.
