Morly stands with the likes of Beat Culture and Fever Trails on Ryan Hemsworth's Secret Songs project, which sees an up and coming producer release a song via Soundcloud every fortnight. Minneapolis soloist Morly offers up his plainchant-inspired slow-burner, "Maelstrom".
The song isn't really what you might expect when you hear the word "producer". That title has become synonymous with electronic-focused music. Not that "Maelstrom" completely lacks that. Helmed by plainchant-inspired vocal progressions, gentle post-rock guitars and hearty bass, the song is subtly fusioned with electronic skitters and fluttering synths. It plays out like a piece of minimalism with the layers becoming gradually denser over three minutes before sinking into nothing. Quite beautiful indeed.
If this is the kind of music Mr Hemsworth is championing on Secret Songs, we better keep listening.
