Mexican Summer are quietly putting together an enviable catalogue. The New York label is responsible for recent releases from softsynth luminaries Oneohtrix and Ford & Lopatin – but it is ’60s-informed guitars, rather than pop futurism, that characterise their latest project.
Mike Wexler is from Brooklyn, but ‘Lens’ sounds distinctly English. Rooted in some of the country’s odder folk traditions, the track has the sound of the south-west counties all over it. There is something of the occult about its finger-picked guitar melodies, which are offset by Wexler’s thick, husk-coated voice. Unassumingly beautiful.
