Irish singer-songwriter LAOISE reflects with the personal-pop of "Halfway"

Galway-based singer-songwriter LAOISE returns with the unnerving darkness of "Halfway", the title track of her forthcoming debut EP.

There's something ominous about "Halfway", particularly the organ-like synth towards the end of the track and the ethereal layered backing vocals. Last year's debut "YOU" showed LAOISE's penchant for shiny electro-pop with eerie twists, but "Halfway" plays with an even darker side of pop. The darkness we hear in the new single reflects the difficult time in LAOISE's life that inspired the lyrics.

“I wrote "Halfway" about two years ago, during a time when I wasn’t paying attention to my own needs and health. I compromised my happiness for other people and their excessive expectations. Writing "Halfway" was my way of pushing past this," the singer-songwriter explains. “It stands as a very important stage in my life and even though, in a way, I’m scared as fuck to release it, I’m so grateful that I can share it with people."

"Halfway" is another promising step into the spotlight, and with LAOISE's upcoming EP set to continue in the same vein of experimentation, we can expect more post-midnight, moonlight-lit pop with plenty of surprises lurking in the shadows.

"Halfway" is out 3 March.
