I think it’s fair to say that Gui Boratto‘s second record wasn’t particularly well received. While Chromophobia remains almost unadulterated, sweet-toothed brilliance, its followup felt unadventurous to the point of laziness.
Now the Sao Paolo producer is back with his third full-length, the mysteriously (ahem) titled III. ‘The Drill’ is the first single from that record, and it sees Boratto in less pastoral mode. A three-note melody is repeated in ever-more distorted form, before a simple harmony opens the track out in suitably euphoric manner. Gone are the pop arpeggios, replaced with convulsive percussion and uncomfortable, metallic noise.
If you’re looking for a return to the endless exuberance of Chromophobia, then ‘The Drill’ might come as something of a surprise. But it marks a welcome return for one of techno’s best-loved producers – and suggests that III could be an altogether darker affair.
