Canadian artist Eryn Martin continues her diverse run of singles with the hypnotic "Middle Class"
Canadian singer/songwriter Eryn Martin strays away from her hip hop influences on dance-inflected new track "Middle Class".
Having started pursuing music seriously after a friend uploaded one of her demos to Soundcloud, Eryn Martin proceeded to release her debut EP EDOG in 2018. Inspired by Timbaland, Missy Elliot and Kanye West, the varied collection pairs Martin's knack for reflective songwriting with her love of hip hop beats. Martin played with her sound from the harder hitting "Swallow" to the more spaced-out sparse dreamscape of tracks like "Trip" and "Weird".
Talking about the story behind the new track Martin explains "it doesn’t matter how much money you have, it’s about how much fun you’re having. Shitty bars, and sketchy house parties will forever be my favourite memories. Reality is we’re broke but we party like the rich." Reminiscent of Confidence Man's tongue in cheek convergence of dance and pop and Sofi Tukker's pulsing marriage of the two, Martin's relaxed delivery and nonchalance is hypnotic.
Martin's fifth track of the year "Middle Class" continues to see her explore sonically. Her versatility is on show across this set of tracks with the up-tempo "Namesez", sparse electronic balladry in the form of "Homie Wonderland" and the alt-pop leaning of Billie Eilish-influenced standout "America". As Martin prepares her next project it'll be interesting to see which lane she goes down.
