Melbourne-based Dannika has released her first single, "Next To You", which is to feature on her forthcoming EP, Peaches, out via Solitaire Records.
Written and recorded with the boys from Good Morning, "Next To You" is a wistful and melancholy release. Stripped to little more than Dannika’s vocals and guitar, it's intentionally vulnerable, bearing all in a deeply personal set of lyrics.
Dannika’s playing may be a little untidy but this lack of precision is charming. Even the name, "Next To You", is devoid of specification, but rather arouses a more general notion of longing. And it's this sense of longing that underpins the whole track, brought most evocatively to life when Dannika sings ‘’I breathe in you/as you breath in me’’. The distracted, blurred focus through which the track is portrayed is parallel to the impact such a feeling incurs, making the track more precise and accurate than its initial impression suggests.
Speaking about the track, Dannika says it's "a sleepy, mellow song about waking up in bed with someone. Lo-fi and a bit messy with honest lyrics plucked straight from diary entries".
