D.A.N releases powerfully emotive queer anthem "Devotion"
Drenched in reverb and emotion, "Devotion" is a breakup-fuelled new cut from DIY artist D.A.N, aka Derry-hailing, London-based Dan Coyle.
Taking on the role of both songwriter and producer, D.A.N is flexing his creative muscles with “Devotion”, taking us on a journey through his breakup via palpable feelings of anger, loss and pain.
“‘Devotion’ as a song definitely represents that ability to turn intense times of vulnerability into music that makes me feel strong,” D.A.N explains. “I love that contradiction.”
From deep tribal drums to echoing vocals, the production and instrumentation grows in strength until the bridge and final refrain, where D.A.N shows his vulnerability and shows us that, through all of this, he is still hurt.
“Even though I was writing about a very specific time in my life, I’m sure a lot of people can relate to it,” says D.A.N. “It’s like, ‘tell me, was a stranger’s love worth more than devotion?’ – we don’t need to hear the answer, we already know the answer. The main thing is making sure we have devotion and love for ourselves.”
The accompanying video is a single-shot piece of art, using projection to amplify the song’s peaks and emotions. “I wanted the video to be chaotic, but still beautiful,” says D.A.N, “as if all the noise in a club stopped and I was given that one chance to say everything that needed to be said.”
D.A.N is set to release his self-produced debut project this year
