Chess Club signees Coach Party release a nostalgic grunge-pop bop on “Breakdown”
Isle of Wight four-piece Coach Party are back with relatable angst on “Breakdown”.
For all its playful and boppy nostalgia, Coach Party's new track's influences reflect on the complex and tumultuous feelings entangled in the process of being in love. “Breakdown” shares the introspection and brazen energy of their previous track "Oh, Lola”, but cranks the riffs, and the relatability, up a notch.
The accompanying video mirrors the track's teen angst as well as the band's shared love of Nirvana, taking part in a school gym hall à la “Smells Like Teen Spirit”.
Lead vocalist and bassist Jess Eastwood explains that the track is about “when love attacks the brain. It’s supposed to be great, and sometimes it is, but amongst all the good vibes you indirectly feed your jealousy, anger, fear, and keep adding to your own problems and insecurities until you literally break down, which at best just resets your emotions and starts the destructive cycle once again.”
Coach Party have just announced shows at a string of city festivals over spring, including Dot to Dot, Stockton Calling, Live at Leeds and Glasgow's Stag & Dagger. They'll play alongside their label-mates Alfie Templeman and Phoebe Green on Chess Club's Class of 2020 tour in May at Birmingham, London and Bristol, and you can find tickets here.
