Benjamin Shaw seems like a miserable fucker. His 2009 EP, the fittingly titled I Got The Pox, The Pox Is What I Got was a collection of starkly unpleasant yet consistently hilarious songs about the horrible realities of boys’ relationships with girls. It is a grim, beautiful record that didn’t get the attention it deserved.
‘When I Fell Over In The City’ was a standout track from that record, and it is getting a welcome re-release on Audio Antihero. It is a characteristically claustrophobic tune with production that harks back to Letting Off The Happiness and lyrics that bring to mind Roald Dahl’s stories for adults. Certainly not for kids, anyway.
Benjamin Shaw’s forthcoming album There’s Always Hope, There’s Always Cabernet is out on Audio Antihero in November.
