Listen: Azekel - "Holy Matrimony" [Premiere]
Barely four weeks have passed since East London’s Azekel made a spectacular return with the arresting, “New Romance”. Now premiering the second half of his double single on Best Fit, “Holy Matrimony” couldn’t be more its antithesis with its soft beats and dawdling dub foundations.
Like much of Azekel’s writing, “Holy Matrimony” is spacious though devoid of the quieter dynamics often needed to achieve such a sound. Loaded at its core with a bold and dubby ostinato, the components - a distorted guitar and choral licks of “love, love, love” - begin to pick up their feet as Azekel flits between fluttering falsetto and deep, swollen vocals. It’s his ability to at once relieve and stuff his songs full to the brim, completed by that voice, that makes us fall under his spell time and time again.
“New Romance” / “Holy Matrimony” is released on 14 July via Thunderlightning Recordings (pre-order here) with support from Generator.
