Our latest downloadable mixtape comes courtesy of new Sonic Cathedral signings Yeti Lane who formed last year out of the ashes of Parisian dream-pop outfit Cyann & Ben. Whilst keeping their former bands pop sensibilities, Yeti Lane manage to mould and manipulate their sound into a pulsing, psychedelic shoegaze-fest. It’s really brilliantly executed stuff. Their self-titled debut is out on 25th January and I strongly urge you check it out. Download a free track from the album over on the Sonic Cathedral website.

I’m always interested in discovering what shoe-gaze bands and artists listen to when not crafting out sonic plates of sound. Their taste always seems more eclectic than most; this can be said about Sonic Cathedral founder Nat Cramp’s mix-tape from last year (download it here – if you’ve not yet heard it, it’s essential). Charlie from Yeti Lane supplied us with the following mix and it’s a fantastic journey through the bands sound… Kraftwerk meets Soft Machine via The Velvet Underground. Download the full mix in mp3 form below.

Animal Collective: “What Would I Want, Sky”
Animal Collective is probably my favorite band of these last years. Merriweather Post Pavilion is the number 1 of my 2009 top, and their latest EP is great too. I picked this track because I like its pop melodies, combined with twisted sounds and 9/4 rythm.

Tortoise: “Ten-Day Interval”
I’m not a huge fan of Tortoise music, but in each of their albums there is a jewel, and this track is one of them.

Kraftwerk: “Radioland”
Hard to select one song, but Kraftwerk are such an important influence that I had to include it on the mix. This one is also one of LoAc’s favourites.

Raymond Scott: “Auto Lite Sta-fu”
We like analog synths, Raymond Scott was one the pioneers…

Soft Machine: “Hope for Hapiness”
Robert Wyatt is my all time favorite artist, I totally admire the man, his music, and the way he feels music. From Soft Machine to his solo carreer, he has had (and still has) a great influence on me, my drumming, and also the last bands I’ve been playing with…

The Velvet Underground: “White Light White Heat”
Because it’s the Velvet Underground and it’s the seed of so many good things…

The Flaming Lips: “Silver Trembling Hands”
Also taken from one of the best records of 2009. I’ve been liking the Flaming Lips for a couple of years, but this one is their best produced record to me. The sound is terrific!

No Age: “Cappo”
I don’t know why, but I’m listening to a lot of duos these days (Japandroids, AU…), I like No Age’s latest album, and I missed the EP they released a couple of months ago. I’ve been told it is even better than the album…

Raymond Scott: “Cheer Revision 3″

Broadcast: “Tender Buttons”
Broadcast has always impressed me, from the first EPs to the one they released recently. “Tender Buttons”, with its rough sound and kraut-pop tunes is a masterpiece, and the show they did in Paris was just wonderful.

Fuck Buttons: “Surf Solar”
They found the perfect alchemy between electronic sounds and shoegaze feelings. Tarot Sport is less underground than the previous album, but it works so good!

Oneida: “Each One Teach One”
Another band that I’ve been following for years. I like that blend of tribal rythms and keyboards, of pop music and experimental stuff….

This Heat: “The Fall of Saigon”
I like This Heat so much… I chose this one but I could have chosen any other track. I’m too young to have listened to it when it came out, but I imagine how this mix of experimental-prog-rock played with a punk-rock energy has been welcome then…
