London’s Younghusband are to release their debut single ‘Carousel’ next month, two years since the band first formed.
Fuzzy and sweetly nostalgic, there is an element of motion throughout ‘Carousel’ caused by the simple repeating guitar riff, creating a cyclicality which feels wholly appropriate when considering the song’s title.
This is not cheery fairground music however, there is an ever present underlying darkness – the slightly off-kilter guitar line that takes a minor step that feels unexpected in every rotation, and the world-weary vocals ensure this. Every so often, everything below the vocals in the mix becomes purposefully muddy and disorientating, and the track becomes more challenging to listen to – but also more interesting than – the seemingly simple sixties-sounding pop song it was at the beginning.
Drifting between lulling, hypnotic lo-fi pop and noisy, jangle-y fuzz, listening to ‘Carousel’ is like eating too much candy floss – an enjoyable sugar-fueled psychedelic experience, not without a dull head ache and nausea. But in a nice way.
‘Carousel’ is released on June 20 and will be available on seven inch vinyl and to download, via Too Pure.
