Taken from their forthcoming self-titled long player, three piece Wray give a glistening preview of their shuddering shoegaze with “Relative”.
Moulding slacker lo-fi vocals along with old-school My Bloody Valentine shoegaze and a healthy dose of good old noise to further split the edges, Wray could have come from the Birmingham on this side of the Atlantic rather than the other. Maybe it’s that stateside influence which sees the band thrust forward with more purpose than you might expect, but right from the off there’s brittle guitar lines and liberal splashes of white noise. It evolves and unfurls as it goes on, expanding and becoming a pulsating, dreamy triumph, demonstrating that Wray also have an ear for melody. It’s (and forgive me for this) much more than a relative success. Ahem.
Wray’s album is out on 15 July via Communicating Vessels.
