Riotous Brighton four-piece WILLOH channel Wolf Alice on debut track “Haircut”
The past few years have seen grungy pop-rock having its moment in the mainstream.
Female-fronted guitar bands such as Honeyblood, Wolf Alice, and Black Honey have conquered venues and hearts around the world, and WILLOH look set to follow in their footsteps.
Debut single “Haircut” features delicate vocals from singer and guitarist Sammy Nottage, backed up by a riotous band. Alongside Nottage, the four-piece is composed of guitarist and university friend Hattie Upton-Dance, bassist Tho Van Pan, and drummer Sam Barrett. The band disclose over email that they “love playing [‘Haircut’] because the verses are so soft, and then we get to rock out to the grungy chorus.”
“Haircut” was the first song Nottage and Upton-Dance wrote together after meeting at university. “It's about change,” the pair explain. “We wrote it when we both brand new to Brighton. It’s about leaving teenage years behind and trying to fit in with the real world.”
After recruiting a drummer and bassist to their ranks, WILLOH began to share their collection of tracks with audiences in London and Brighton. Whilst “Haircut” is their first release, they’ve already got several UK festival appearances lined up for this summer. It’s safe to say we’ll probably be hearing plenty more from them in the future.
