I wish my Weird Dreams were as winsome and well-formed as the songs by the band of the same name. Heck, not even my good dreams match the London quartet for chirpiness.
In truth Weird Dreams are not particularly weird or dreamy, at least not in the way chillwave is dreamy. If anything, it’s more the 50′s definition of the word that applies here, i.e. — Gee, Weird Dreams are dreeeeeaaaammmy.
Don’t get me wrong, there is haze — but there’s also recognisable hooks, and individually discernible instruments. The textures are not disorientating, and though it’s lo-fi, there’s an Ariel Pink-like vintage-pop shininess to everything.
There’s a simpleness to Weird Dreams’ sound which feels refreshing. Like all great pop, it all feels quite effortless, as if the song grew fully-formed out of the ground – or indeed, as if it appeared to them in a dream (sorry, couldn’t resist.)
That’s not to say their music is simplistic – there’s genre-spanning a-plenty and a perfected scuzziness that counterpoints the loveliness and stops it being twee.
Their song A Month Full of Mondays appeared on the Tough Love Records sampler Young and Research II which we wrote about last week.
They are having an EP release party at The Victory Basement in Dalston tomorrow (April 5), with Not Cool and The History of Apple Pie.
Listen to songs Little Girl and Hypnagogic Lullaby below.
