London four piece Savages release the latest instalment of their call to arms, album opener ‘Shut Up’.
If there’s one thing Savages want, it’s your undivided attention. From their no-mobiles at gig policy to the poetic mission statement that adorns the front cover, they’re open about their politics and the way their music should be received. In the silence below the clamouring stimulations of the modern world comes the buzzing sound of the revolution’s drum beat, the “distant rhythm of an angry young tune”.
“Shut Up” again proves they’ve got more than enough muscle to justify the rhetoric. It trades a degree of their in-yer-face aggression for the track’s tense atmospheric build, and a snarling post-punk pulse that throbs with sabre-toothed immediacy. Coming back with footage of the visceral thrill of their live show, directed by Giorgio Testi, the opener to their highly anticipated album that feels like it will be difficult to interrupt. Silence yourself – Savages are speaking.
Silence Yourself is released 5 May on Matador.
