Watch: Eva Stone – “Runaway Lover” [Premiere]

14 February 2014, 14:00 | Written by Chris Taylor

Outside of the obvious places such as London and Leeds, Newcastle – home to stotties, bottles of Dog, and very very cheap nights out – might just be one of the most supportive music scenes in the UK. With umpteen different prestigious venues to cut your teeth at, and plenty of veteran bands willing to lend some sage advice, it’s an exciting place to get involved in music.

-Eva Stone was a regular player on the Newcastle scene and has now managed to bag TV presenter Jameela Jamil for a manager alongside support dates with one of Ones To Watch 2014: George Ezra.

She is definitely going places, if this session of “Runaway Lover” is anything to go by. Stone was always one to be inspired by the likes of Muddy Waters, having grown up in a family surrounded by blues, but it only slightly seeped into her raw, passionate acoustic tracks that made the mark in the Toon.

“Runaway Lover” is fuelled by that rootsy music, with echoes of the likes of BB King present. Stone’s voice is the star of the show here though. One second it’s packed with emotion yet turned down to a whisper in a way that only Laura Marling has perfected, before bursting forth with a spit and a snarl; that earthy passion really being let loose to devastate everything in its path.

While Stone doesn’t yet have any official releases, the fact she’s bagged herself a number of big sessions and a support slot with Ezra is proof enough that this girl has talent and people are starting to recognise it beyond that Newcastle bubble.
