Cat’s Eyes, the duo of Faris Badwan and Rachel Zeffira, have released a video of themselves performing the 1964 Geoff Stephens penned song ‘The Crying Game’, which was made famous by Brenda Lee in 1965, and then Boy George in 1992. The pair performed the song live at London’s Musical Museum, with Badwan on vocals and guitar, and Zeffira playing cor anglais, and a vintage Wurlitzer organ.
The piercing cor anglais, paired with Badwan’s breathy gloom-filled vocals, and the slightly spooky whirring of the organ – combined with the wonderfully shadowy setting – make for a very atmospheric, and darkly beautiful performance. There is a great stillness, and the echoing of the cor anglais gives the impression that they are playing in a deserted old music hall, like the ghostly presence of some long-dead band that just kept playing.
