Listen: Velour Modular - "Struck"
Last we heard from velvet-throated French vocalist Annabelle Guilhem, who records under the stage name Velour Modular, was her cerebral and tastefully kitschy Capsule EP (the track “Esc” was featured as Best Fit’s Song of The Day).
Where Guilhem interwove her interests in numerology and sci-fi into a heady concept-laden mix, her latest tracks unite her with Berlin producer Phon.O, lending them a decidedly darker, icier edge. “Struck” finds Guilhem ballasted by merely the occasional synth swathe and skittering percussion; gone are the quirky midi-flavoured accents and tints of exoticism.
Though she sticks to the existential themes from Capsule, Guilhem conveys herself more personally in these darker environs. Whereas we noted her “buttery, soulful voice” that proved a juxtaposition to her global-inflected electro last time out, Guilhem’s slinky, sexy vocals here prove the ideal pairing to her shadowy accompaniments.
