Tree House takes a groove-driven step in an exciting new direction on latest offering “Head Up High”

Featuring flourishes of colourful saxophone interludes, a bouncing bassline and an utterly infectious groove, “Head Up High” marks a distinctive and intriguing new direction for Tree House.

Tree House is the brainchild project of London-based artist Will Fortna. He adopted the Tree House moniker as a way of paying homage to the place where he taught himself how to sample drums and in turn started honing his distinctive minimalist style.

“Head Up High” is the first sliver of new music to come from the artist since 2017’s Into The Ocean EP and signals a decidedly bold move away from minimalist pop tunes to a saxophone-spiked, David Byrne-flecked groove. The production is sharp, so every beat bites in all the right places and despite the saxophone’s summery exterior, there’s a menacing streak that runs through its spiralling motifs that's makes the whole thing even more enticing.

Speaking on the project and the new direction that "Head Up High" signals, Fortna says "Tree House started off as a decidedly minimalist bedroom project, working within certain specific parameters - some some borne out of necessity, some out of artistic choice. Although I still record everything myself in my bedroom, Tree House has become much more expansive and confident and ‘Head Up High’ is a perfect encapsulation of this. There’s a certain swagger to the song and Nathan’s sax solos help send the song into outer space."

You can catch the Arthur Russell-inspired project on their upcoming UK tour this May as it heads out on the road with Viewfinder.

"Head Up High" is out now via Memorials of Distinction and available to also available to listen to on Spotify.
