Thyla show their (almost) sweet side on new outing "Candy"
The new track comes as the first to be shared following the announcement of their as-of-yet-unnamed forthcoming debut EP.
Twisting the knife on their recent brighter outings including "Pristine Dream" and last year’s "Ferris Wheels", "Candy" strikes a more sombre tone, yet loses none of their precision pop streak. Following 2018’s earlier releases "Blame" and "I Was Biting", the track trickles through the same grunge-fuelled vein with pounding drumbeats, lazily lucid guitar riffs and Milly Duthie’s increasingly commanding vocal.
“My teeth fall out in my dreams: what does it mean?” she inquires in the opening line with a confident ease that belies Thyla’s year sharing bills with the likes of Sunflower Bean, INHEAVEN and Fickle Friends. Acclimatising to their new, darker tone, Duthie’s lyrics are captivatingly morose.
“You know when you have impending doom and you have no idea why because there’s nothing specifically wrong that you can put your finger on, and your dreams are messed up, and when you wake up you wonder what they mean?” share the band on what sparked the idea for the track. “That’s what ‘Candy’ is about”.
