Listen: The New Spring - "The Hours Of The Day"
Unlike his other project, the experimental rock sounds of Shout Wellington Air Force, Bastian Kallesøe’s alias The New Spring allows the singer-songwriter to fully engage in his love and appreciation for the charm of an acoustic hook and mellow, laid-back vocal.
“The Hours of The Day” has the kind of mischievous pull to it that is synonymous with sun soaked adventures and spending long, halcyon summer days attempting to experience all that they have to offer (or, at least, queuing up a folk-heavy playlist and pretending to).
In a similar vein to Paul Baribeau’s modern alt-folk anthem “Strawberry”, “The Hours of The Day”, Kallesøe’s first release since 2012’s Secret Armor, is a poetic, winsome ode to just that: welcoming the start of a new day and appreciating the little things throughout that might go amiss. Cloaked in a childlike sense of admiration for what a new dawn can bring, Kallesøe’s clear, charismatic vocals and knack for an upbeat guitar-led arrangement (one that is almost the dictionary definition of “jaunty”) proves that the pleasant, uplifting folk of “The Hours of The Day” is completely compelling in its welcome simplicity and charm.
The New Spring’s forthcoming album, Late Bloomer, is due for release in September 2014.
