The Golden Dregs’ “The Queen Of Clubs” is a mellow journey through the dark side of nightlife
The South London-based project of Benjamin Woods, The Golden Dregs juxtapose the bleakness of losing yourself to the city at night with the warmth of an orthodox country atmosphere on “The Queen Of Clubs”.
Following a relatable narrative that's delivered by Woods’ smooth, deep vocals, The Golden Dregs' new Americana-hued track is pushed along by the growing swing of percussion and brass. The classic folk acoustic guitars give a comforting familiarity, contrasting with the spontaneity and disorderly feel of the nightlife that the track touches on.
The video for the track captures the nightlife of Berlin, whilst the Western outfit and proud line-dancing habits of the main character complement the hints of country on the track. Woods explains: “'The Queen of Clubs' follows a character consumed by the darker side of nightlife. In my mind the narrative is based in Berlin. It’s a city where it seems easy to lose yourself, like you could easily wake up one day and ten years just disappeared in a blur.
'It made sense that the video be set in Berlin. I’m fortunate enough to have an amazing group of friends out there, and we spent a weekend together working on this great visual. The collaboration was probably the most enjoyable part of the whole album process.”
