With two impressive EPs, S and See.SZA.Run, already under her belt, New Jersey artist SZA looks just about set to explode as her third effort approaches.
With her career now primed with the accolade of being the first female artist signed to Kendrick Lamar/Black Hippy label TDE, SZA has consistently demonstrated her fresh, original creative and artistic abilities, which are particularly exemplified in new single ‘Teen Spirit’.
Her seductive vocals float alluringly through this track, captivating but seemingly effortless. Imbued with youthful raw innocence, and a soulful twist, ‘Teen Spirit’ is dreamy RnB meeting darkened gritty trap. Produced by Wondagurl, the high-school talent behind Jay-Z’s ‘Crown’, there is undoubtedly a level of Magna Carter Holy Grail sound quality to ‘Teen Spirit’. Matching hip hop’s biggest star in terms of production levels is an incredible achievement in itself, especially considering SZA’s just getting going.
Refusing to relinquish any creative control on new video for ‘Teen Spirit’, this is clearly a girl with some seriously independent ideas, and her refusal to compromise definitely pays off; SZA’s meticulous precision and individualism shines through.
